Our NeighborhoodTrinity Church is located in the historic East Lovejoy neighborhood of Buffalo on the far east side of the city. Known as the "Iron Island", the area was for many years completely surrounded by railroad tracks. Many of the tracks still exist, along with the bridges and culverts that allowed access to the "island." About 7,000 people make their home in East Lovejoy, occupying simple, solid homes constructed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The early German, Italian, Polish, and Irish laborers mostly worked in the railroad yards. Today's population is increasingly diverse, and people are employed throughout the region. Many children live in the homes of East Lovejoy, and the community is proud of its school. In 2006, School 43 was converted back to a K-8 "Discovery School". Other community assets include a historic firehouse, an art deco theater that has been converted into an indoor swimming pool, a library, and a community center (A.B.L.E.Y.) in Hennepin Park providing activities for youth and senior citizens. East Lovejoy is a wonderful place for those who enjoy the convenience of city living, with easy access to downtown as well as close proximity to major shopping centers. With the conversion of School 43 to a neighborhood K-8 school, it is hoped that more people will see East Lovejoy as an ideal community to raise a family and enjoy the assets of this "village within the city." Trinity UCC is committed to its place in the East Lovejoy community. We hope that our church renewal will be closely tied to the ongoing revitalization of this part of our city.
